Why Executives Drop Dead

Filed under: Native American Designs — xiang @ 2:55 pm

“The Life Extension Institute reported that of 1000 holders of life insurance policies in amounts of $25,000 or over who had received extensive examination since January 1, 1938 . . . 79 per cent were found to have physical impairments (18.5 per cent of which were high blood pressure and 22 per cent abnormalities of the heart).” In May, 1950, Dr. S. C. Franco reported finding major disease in 25 per cent of all executives receiving periodic health examinations. The 35-forty million pounds of honey produced by our cooperative is what makes up the Forever Bee Honey you see on the shelf. 19 Finally, Fortune in an article, “Why Executives Drop Dead,” quoted the Life Extension Examiners of New York to the effect that “60 per cent of the executive group examined had conditions requiring a physician’s attention, the larger part of them of a cardiovascular nature.”20 It has remained for Dr. Sidney A. Portis to call attention to conditions among younger execu¬tives that “if permitted to go unrecognized, may produce morbidity and mortality of a degree similar to that already reported.” 21

In a paper read before the Section on Preventive and In¬dustrial Medicine and Public Health at the Ninety-ninth Annual Session of the American Medical Association in San Francisco on June 29,1950,22 Dr. Portis stated that exhaustion in relatively young executives “has not been stressed by other investigators in surveys previously published.” For many years Dr. Portis has been seeing “executives in their early forties and fifties who became utterly exhausted.” He made a study of fifty such executive patients all under the age of fifty, and he discovered that “in 60 per cent of the group fatigue was one of the outstanding complaints.” He subjected these business executives to the three-hour Dextrose Toler¬ance Test. “In 58 per cent of the entire group of executive patients, the third-hour blood sugar level was below the initial level determined during fasting. In some instances there was a drop of 30 to 40 mg. per 100 cc., while in others the drop was between 5 and 15 mg.

One severely fatigued executive showed a fasting level of 87 mg. per 100 cc.” which is not below normal, but “at the third hour his blood sugar level had dropped to 44 mg.” In previous studies Dr. Portis has shown that this relatively low blood sugar is due to an overstimulation of the islands of Langerhans—hyperinsulinism—“mediated by the parasym-pathetic nervous system via the vagi. Blocking of the vagus nerves with atropine sulfate throughout the twenty-four-hour period has resulted in the elimination of this drop in blood sugar values. Several patients who have had a vagectomy for treatment of peptic ulcer have also shown a diminution of their drop in blood sugar values.
